A couple pictures from the enlargement of Tanya Ragir's 'Doubt Kills the Warrior' torso sculpture. I was recently invited by my good friend, fellow sculptor and very talented artist to share some tricks of the trade in helping her to enlarge one of her beautiful figure sculptures. It's always an honor to be invited into another artist's studio and what a pleasure it's been to work with Tanya! Here we have the development of a 4' x 4' x 8' enlargement from her life-sized "Sara" sculpture. The armature for this piece is cut out of a foam block with a hot wire tool from hand drawn frontal and side profiles. Once the profiles are cut, we use a combination of cutting, carving and gluing to achieve a core form on which the clay sculpture can be modeled in water clay. Two sculpture enlargements that I was commissioned to do for Jim Carrey at Ironwood Scenic in Los Angeles. I was provided with two miniature models created by the artist and requested to create same size replica's which I would then scale ten times the size into monumental sculpture reproductions for an exhibition at the Heather James Gallery in Palm Desert, CA. The replicas were modeled in Chavant oil clay on wire armatures and then approved by the celebrity and artist. Once given the go ahead, I welded up steel armatures with support braces and gussets. I then blocked out the forms of the sculptures in bead foam and assembled them onto the armatures. The foam was carved back beyond the final sculpture surface and a skin was then modeled over the foam in EM217 water clay. Waste molds were then made in hemp re-enforced casting plaster and placed in a heated room to dry. The sculptures were cast in fiberglass with welded steel structures, assembled, body shopped and painted to match the original models provided by the artist. With a timeline of only nine weeks to produce these monumental sized sculptures we successfully completed the sculptures for the opening exhibition and delivered them to a very happy client! Pumpkin Carving Fun with Heidi Klum at Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch

I was recently invited to film a fun segment demonstrating some of my pumpkin carving techniques with the beautiful and talented Heidi Klum at Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch in West Hollywood where I carve pumpkins every year with patrons and their kids leading up to halloween. As you can see from the pictures, we had a lot of fun filming the segment for Heidi Klum on Aol. and carving our pumpkins together was a blast! Thanks Heidi for being a great sport! Especially when it came down to the "dirty" work of cleaning out the inside of the pumpkins. I'd also like to extend a big thank you to all that were involved: Dr. Christmas aka Bob Pranga and Debi Staron who invited me aboard, Lyra Marble the owner of Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch for hosting us and Desiree Gruber along with the Full Picture crew for putting it all together. Here we have a bench that I recently produced for the entrance way to a clients home. The bench is made of solid black laquered and polished maple. Set into the top of the bench is a recessed sculptural textured panel that I created and cast in resin. Once fitted and installed, I applied an antique silver coating with a black patina. It was then buffed, polished and sealed with a satin finish.

The Premier of Kung Fu Panda 2 where my sculpted chinese dragon for Dreamworks Animation was featured in an opening ceremony procession on the red carpet. The event was a huge success and star studded with talents Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Jack Black, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, James Hong, Dreamworks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and many more. It was an honor and pleasure to have worked with the ME3 Production team and the Immortals Lion Dance Team. Finally, none of this would have been possible if it weren't for Ralph Hudson and Scot Mahotz at Ironwood Scenic who have had me as there resident sculptor and art department lead for the past six years. The sculpted dragon head was hand carved in foam, molded in plaster and cast in light weight fiberglass.

Pietro Cipriani's Dancing Faun (The Juggler) for The J. Paul Getty Museum.

This is a project I did at Ironwood for the Getty museum in Los Angeles. I was contracted to replicate a version of Pietro Cipriani's, Dancing faun, 1722-24. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate how a wax would look prior to shelling for bronze investment casting (lost wax). In order to re-create the wax look, I had to tint the casting resin just right so it would appear to be semi translucent. The original piece was molded in silicone rubber and cast in wax, then the sprues, gates and vents were sculpted around the piece. I molded all the fabricated parts, then cast them and the sculpture in resin and assembled the final piece. The reason for using resin is to insure that the sculpture will not lose its shape or sag over time. It will be on display at the Getty Museum spring 2009.

The Mummy 3: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor.

I worked on the Mummy 3 production for five months. It was an honor to sculpt Jet Li's character "The Dragon Emperor" statue and body armor along with the Chariot Horses and Terra Cotta Warriors. The pieces were sculpted in foam, water clay and or oil clay then molded in silicone rubber. We cast all of the statues in fiberglass re-enforced hydro stone with wood armatures. The project had plenty of sculpture work and it was a great experience to work along side Arts 3D owner Lucie Fournier, my father and production designer Nigel Phelps.

Sculpted Rex Dinosaur for Toy Story 2 and Disney's Pixar Play Parade Float.

Here is a monumental size carving I did of Rex at Ironwood Scenic for Disney's Pixar Play parade at California Adventure. T-Rex Stands at 15' tall to the top of his tail not including the parade float platform and Bouncing ball that he is mounted on. I carved this piece in foam to meet the likeness of the Animated character from Toy Story 2 and the approval of the Disney creators. This project involved a great deal more than meets the eye. It was fiberglass cast from plaster waste molds and assembled on a heavy duty 4x4" x 1/2" wall steel structure. T-Rex weight in at over 900lbs and his is eyes were animated to swivel from side to side. The steel bar in his mouth was engineered and fabricated to rotate on ball bearings and support two acrobats spinning on either side.

Here we have a 1/4 scale model of The Nissan Cube I fabricated at Animal Makers Inc. for Tokyo Fiber '09 Senseware an Industrial Textile Trade Show in Milan, Italy. Spring 2009. This piece was machine carved then hand finished and detailed. We molded the car and it's components in silicone rubber and cast the body and windows in fiberglass epoxy resin. All of the panels of the vehicle were made to be removable so that the body could be stretched in our clients super stretch white fabric. The lights were hollowed out and sculpted in the negative to give the impression of a real lens and then cast in crystal clear pressurized resin. The head and tail lights were air brushed and polished while windows were painted automotive black, clear coated and polished. The Cube has an animated mouth, eyes and cheeks that are triggered by a motion sensor to run four separate shows. Thanks for the look!

Cinderella's sculpted slipper and ottoman produced for The Cinderella Castle in Tokyo Japan. The Slipper was carved in foam and coated with a dura-tech plastic coating then sanded to a super smooth finish. Once polished, the slipper was molded and cast in crystal clear urethane resin and polished to a glass like finish. The ottoman was turned on a lathe and legs were hand carved in foam, the piece was then molded in a plaster waste mold, cast in fiberglass (FRP) and assembled. It was then painted to match the interior color theme of the castle.

A 10" sculpted model proposed to The P.I.C.T.U.R.E. Art's Foundation for one of the California State University, Dominguez Hills Garden Sculptures. The sculpted model features five figures dressed in their traditional cloth, holding hands, and positioned in a circle symbolic of earth. The piece is designed to be a reminder of cultural diversity and tolerance. The figures look out to the viewer and invite them to join in their pursuit of peace. The sculpted figures are positioned on an octagonal base. The shape was chosen because of the number eight's shared importance in varying religions and cultures. From Judaism to Buddhism & Christianity. The number eight symbolizes a universal concept of new beginnings and the nature of transcending to a higher level. The octagonal base is intended to be both the literal and figurative foundation that supports this installation and its concept.

Fiber-optic Eel for Animal Makers Inc.

Here is a silicone eel that cast and developed for Animal Makers Inc. Our client requested a new approach to display this white mouth Moray Eel. So some planning with president and creative director of Animal Makers, Jim Boulden we decided to create a fiber optic, animated eel that would creep out from an aquarium of rocks. It's skin would light up and it would open its mouth while tilting its head towards the viewers. Above, is the semi-translucent silicone skin that I painted into the mold in several tinted silicone layers with contrasting variations of color, tint, tone and opacity. I also developed a silicone plug-board system that could attach to the skin (seen in the video below) to allow for a fast and easy way to install the fiber optic strands to the inner core of the eel.

Here's a Bonneville motorcycle fairing that I helped my employer and friend Ralph Hudson build at Ironwood Inc. The fairing was carved in foam and cast in fiberglass. I recently received word from him saying that "The project bike worked as well as hoped and better than expected. We qualified for a record run on Monday and broke the record on Tuesday morning. The average speed was 210.623 mph! That's enough to get into the 200 Mile Per Hour Club, a dream I've had since 1976."

Latex and Poly-Foam Horse and Donkey for Animal Makers Inc.

Here we have a realistic horse and donkey that I worked on at Animal Makers Inc. The animals were cast in poly-foam with a custom tinted latex skin. The latex was brushed into an epoxy mold and backed with poly-foam on a flexible aluminum and steel welded armature. Once de-molded, the seams were trimmed and burnt down. The dark and light haired areas were air brushed onto the latex and the eyes, tail and tongue attached with safety wire and prosaide glue. The pieces were than flocked.

Title Floats for The Celebrate a Street Party Parade for Disneyland at California Adventure.

Here are the intro and finale floats that we created at Ironwood Scenic for the Celebrate Parade at Disneyland's California Adventure in Anaheim, CA. Working as the sculptor and art department lead, I was responsible for sculpting accurate Disney characters Pluto, Chip and Dale while coordinating the art department with the wood, metal shop and working with Sr. Art Designer Bradley Kaye. Sculpted characters and lettering were hand carved in foam while drums were fabricated in wood. Dancing characters and Mickey head were fabricated in steel and aluminum.

Three pairs of high heel pumps that I sculpted for artist Erin Lareau. To be exhibited on permanent display in the theater/arts district on Lankershim Boulevard in Burbank, CA. The high heel pump was carved in foam from a 1/10 scale model provided by the artist. It was then molded in fiberglass and six were cast in concrete with a stainless steel welded armature. Once assembled, they were tiled with colored glass and tinted grout.

Sileus Krater Replica for The J. Paul Getty Museum.

Here we have an interesting project that I worked on for The J. Paul Getty Museum at Ironwood. It is a replica of the Sileus Krater, an ancient Greek terra cotta bowl that was used for mixing wine with water. created around 515BC there are only 27 surviving vases that were painted by the renowned artist Euphronios. The purpose of the project was to create a fiberglass replica that could be used as a interactive learning tool at The Getty Museum. Guests can try their hand with an erasable marker at filling in the missing parts of the illustration. The vase was turned on a lathe and handles were hand sculpted. They were then molded and cast in fiberglass. The drawings were first drawn on a flat surface then adapted to fit the contours of the piece. Once the base color was painted, the artwork was transferred onto the vase and clear-coated..

A sculpted outdoor Neptune theme water fountain for Park Laurier-Charlemangne in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The sculpture was modeled in EM217 water clay and molded in silicone with a fiberglass support jacket. Once molded, the piece was cast in Design-Cast 62, a polymer based casting stone that can be tinted and cast with steel and chopped fiberglass re-enforcement. The beauty of this product is that we also added aggregate of the same stone which surrounds the piece so that it blends seamlessly with it's surrounding stone framework. Once cast and sealed, the sculpture was plumed with a water pump and adjustable spray system then installed and blended into the stonework that frames the piece.

This painting was inspired by photographs from Tuscany provided by my client. He wanted a impressioniststyle painting of a Vineyard he saw on a fall day in Tucany, Italy. The painting wass rendered with an impasto paint application technique and in an impressionist style. It was hand stretched on a traditionally crafted wood frame and the gesso was made with rabbit skin glue, water and plaster.
